SOS with leftover Easter ham

SOS: comprised of cream, milk, butter, flour, ground pepper, and leftover Easter ham

Atlas Obscura describes the first appearance of the affectionately named “shit on a shingle” (SOS) in the 1910 Manual for Army Cooks, featuring 15 pounds of beef to feed 60 men.

This turn of the 19th century breakfast staple showcases dried, salted, pressed, and thinly sliced beef.

May I offer you a real game changer: SOS Gone Ham.

The same creamy buttery ground peppery flavor packed with Easter’s leftovers.


  • 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 T ground pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped leftover ham

The How To:

  • Melt 1/4 cup of butter in a medium sized saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of flour and mix with a whisk.
  • Slowly incorporate your cream and milk. Cook, stirring slowly and constantly, for about 6-8 minutes, or until thickened.
  • Add your ham and season with ground pepper to taste.

We labeled ours over leftover buttermilk biscuits, but I also highly recommend a thick-sliced potato bread.
